Reporting to: Head of Programs

Duration of Contract: One year contract, annual renewal subject to funding

Type of Employment: Full-time, 40 hours per week

Duty Station: Nairobi with some in country travels

Light for the World is a global disability and development organization that enables eye health and empowers people with disabilities in some of the world’s poorest regions. In Kenya, Light for the World runs its flagship project dubbed theInBusiness Initiative, which aims at economically empowering communities of persons with disabilities through inclusive collaborations.

Light for the World seeks to recruit a Senior MERLA Officer based in Kenya to coordinate the MERLA efforts of its programmatic interventions. The main purpose of this position is to ensure the availability and functionality of a complete MERLA system that integrates the various actors- communities, implementing partners, internal staff, and external actors such as governments, donors, experts, consultants, among other stakeholders and key actors that Light for the World Kenya work with.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  1. Building and updating MERLA systems: The MERLA Officer will be responsible to set up or further develop complete MERLA systems both for the operational projects/programs and for the Country Strategy of Light for the World
  2. Projects and partners monitoring: The MERLA Officer will be responsible for monitoring the implementation of projects by Light for the World and partners at country level. With the actors of the respective projects, (s)he will ensure the implementation of the project monitoring plans.
  3. Sharing experience, learning and communication: The MERLA officer will work with Knowledge management officer to ensure ongoing programmatic learning by making sure that the lessons learnt are transformed into information and knowledge relevant for improving programme quality and effectiveness
  4. Technical support: The MERLA officer will provide technical and operational support to country office programme staff and staff of partner organisations in designing, setting up and operating MERLA systems on project, programme, and country levels.
  5. Partnership and collaboration: The MERLA officer will build and maintain collaboration with partner institutions/organisations through their monitoring and evaluation services to ensure that experiences are shared

Key Competencies and Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in monitoring and evaluation or related field
  • Master’s degree in related field preferred
  • 5-10 years’ experience in a senior-level M&E/MEL/MERLA role.
  • Strong skills in Monitoring and Evaluation systems
  • Strong data analytical skills
  • Strong research skills
  • Strong in developing lesson learnt documents
  • Experience of MERLA systems and frameworks
  • Experience of solving technical problems and providing solutions
  • Experience of providing desktop and onsite technical support
  • Experience of using Ms Word, Excel and power point.
  • Experience of processing and reporting performance data


  • Experience of Monitoring and Evaluation within International development Organizations
  • Experience of reporting and monitoring on project Key performance indicators.
  • Power Business Intelligence data analysis experience
  • Experience with ActivityInfo M&E database
